A Little Empathy, Please

After all the debate, all the arguing, all the back and forth on the issue of marriage equality, today I want you to think about just one thing. I want you to imagine how it would feel if other people were allowed to vote on the validity of your relationship. How would you feel if millions of people were stepping into voting booths right now to decide whether YOUR marriage would be “valid or recognized”?

You know, I didn't feel so strongly about this until I had gay and lesbian friends in loving, committed relationships. Now, I want my friends to have everything, every opportunity, every right, every benefit, every protection that I have as an American citizen - because I love them and because it's the right thing to do. I want this to be a day when we move forward in the struggle for equality and civil rights for all Americans. That's what will make it truly historic.

It doesn't really matter in the end whether we vote anyone's relationship valid or invalid. What matters is how God votes it, and the Bible is clear on that point.

Isn't the most important thing how you view your own relationship? Is prop 8 really going to effect how you and your partner feel about each other?

Thanks, Esther. Appreciate your support.

Anon 1 -- if God will punish me, it won't be for who I loved, but for who I DIDN'T love.

Anon 2 -- you are correct. No matter how the vote turns out, my relationship with my husband will not change.

It looks as though Prop 8 is going to pass. Maybe instead of redefining marriage in the constitution we should declare all unions, same-sex or heterosexual, as domestic partnerships and use the term marriage for those who also want a religious union. What do you think of that?

Why not call it a different thing? Why must traditional marriage and families change to accommodate your selfish lifestyles? If it were not for traditional marriage, you would not exist. It is not right, it is not good for society and our future.

Anon 3 --

My "selfish" lifestyle?! You know NOTHING about my "lifestyle," which is anything but selfish. Your marriage, your family needed to change not one jot or tittle to allow MY family the protections offered by civil marriage.

If we could call it a different thing, we would. If civil unions were required for ALL couples to obtain the civil benefits of marriage, that would be fine. But that is simply politically unfeasible.

BTW, there will be no more anonymous comments on this blog. If you want to say something, you have to stand up and be counted and not hide behind the tag of "anonymous."
